Message from Rev. Matt Handi - Major Feast Days and Holidays Schedule 2023-2024
Dear Friends in Christ.
Today I write you with news regarding next steps in our community as we continue to transition as a parish served by a priest working at two parishes.
Recently, your vestry met with the vestry at St. Luke’s to discuss coordinating worship services over the next year.
One decision that came from this discussion is this: We will continue our current single service schedule at 10:15 am. This service time has worked well since I started here July 1 and it gives me ample time to make it from St. Luke’s to St. James’ on Sundays. It also means we will be able to continue to hold weekly services, which I think is so important as we work to build up and grow St. James’ in the years to come.
One important change to note will be around our major feast days and holidays. For example, we will be holding three Christmas Eve services this year at the two parishes. In the past, both churches have held a well attended late afternoon service along with a late evening service. This year, we will be holding a 4 pm service at St. James’ and a 6 pm service at St. Luke’s followed by a 10 pm service at St. James’ again. We will also hold a single 9 am service on Christmas Day at St. Luke’s.
I will add that our Christmas Eve services will be scheduled on a rotating basis so next year St. Luke’s will hold the early and late services while St. James’ will host the middle service.
We will continue to share services during Holy Week as we have done these past two years and I think this arrangement has worked rather well.
I should note we came to these decisions with the intent of “trying things on”. If the proposed schedule doesn’t work somehow, we will adjust.
I am so grateful for the vestry’s and your willingness to make this all work. I am blessed to serve two wonderful communities.
Please know I am available to talk about these changes and I am happy to chat! Please reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or comments.
Thank you all and blessings to you as we enter into this new program year!
Faithfully,
The Rev. Matt Handi
