Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life is the opening line of The Call, one of George Herbert’s (1593-1633) selections from The Temple (published 1633). The Call is a simple yet direct poem composed of one syllable words with allusions to Old and New Testaments (Revelations 22:26; John 14:6 [Sunday’s Gospel reading]). 'Come' is the call of the poet to God, but it is also the response of the poet to a call from God.
Ralph Vaughan Williams included The Call in his Five Mystical Songs, and this setting was modified into a hymn (see Hymn #487). Our choir’s setting this Sunday is by John Leavitt (b. 1956), well-known composer, conductor, pianist, and teacher.
To honor the coronation, the closing organ voluntary is a setting by French organist/composer Guilmant of the British patriotic song, Rule Britannia.
