Church by the Pond aka "Lunch in the Park"
Church by the Pond is an “ecclesia ministry” of Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford. Every Saturday throughout the year regardless of the weather, a service is held at 2 p.m. in an open space near the carousel in Bushnell Park. From 20-60 people, many of them homeless and living in shelters, gather for the service and to hear God’s word. The celebrants at the service are
Episcopal and Lutheran clergy from the greater Hartford area who preach and share
the good news of Jesus Christ’s love with those who come together for worship.
Immediately following the service, bag lunches prepared by a church or community
group are distributed to the participants.
Twice a year, St. James’ volunteers prepare 45-50 bag lunches containing two
sandwiches with condiment packets, chips, cookies, fruit and a napkin plus bottled
water. The volunteers are invited to attend the gathering and help distribute the
lunches after the service.
In 2023 we are scheduled to prepare lunches on April 29th and September 30th .
