Winter and Spring Adult Formation Offerings

January 5, 12, February 2, & 9: “Living the Rule of St. Benedict Today”

Join us for a four session workshop as we explore contemporary Benedictine spirituality based on the book Wisdom Distilled from the Daily by Joan Chittister, OSB. Topics for discussion will include: prayer, community, humility, work, leisure, hospitality, obedience, stability, and peace. Reading this book is essential for fully engaging in this workshop.

Wednesday evenings, 7:00-8:30PM.

Saturday morning, February 12, 2011 Good Influence; Teaching the Wisdom of Adulthood by Rev. Dan Heischman

Join us from 10:00am to 12:00PM at Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford for an in depth conversation about this timely book from Dan Heischman.  Young people today desperately seek to develop an inner core that will not only rescue them in times of distress, but also help them to define and shape moral convictions, passions, and interests in building a better world.  Heischman points out that young people don't necessarily want adults to become part of "their" world, but they invite us - and need us - to be different....to be adults for them.

February 16, 2011: Presentation and discussion of the “Proposed Anglican Covenant”

What is the proposed Anglican Covenant and how does it impact the Episcopal Church?

Wednesday evening, 7:00-9:00PM

The Episcopal Church USA is a member province of the world-wide Anglican Communion of Churches.  While the Episcopal Church is a self-governing church, the Anglican Consultative Council has proposed a covenant agreement that all churches within the Anglican Communion would abide by in order to retain unity through our inter-connected relationships.  This covenant proposal is in part linked to issues of divisiveness throughout the Anglican Communion relating to the consecration of Bishop Gene Robinson in 2003.

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefforts-Schori has encouraged all faith communities within the Episcopal Church to read the covenant document, explore the study guide, pray and discuss the discernable issues, and talk to others regarding this proposal prior to General Convention 2012.  The mind of Christ is not discerned in isolated communities, but as we engage these matters more broadly, with those who agree, those who disagree, and those who ask probing questions.  It is important that you read the entire proposed covenant prior to this workshop in order to get a broad understanding of the covenant agreement and its implications.

March 16, 23, 30, April 6, & 13, 2011:  “Hosanna; A Spiritual Journey Through Holy Week”

Wednesday evenings, 7:00-8:30PM

Please join us for this Kerygma Bible study course during Lent, 2011.  The week from Palm Sunday to Easter Day is arguably the most important week of the Christian year.  We will prepare for that week through a five session series of guided discussions based on Bible readings and issues raised in the Kerygma resource book.  We’ll use our informal small group format for much of the learning, seeking to enrich our understanding of this final week in Jesus’ life and its impact on ours.

Friday evenings, May 6, 13, 20, 27, June 3, & 10, 2011.  Spring Bible Study: Book of Hebrews

The book of Hebrews was written as a sermon to second generation Christians who found themselves as a faith community in crisis.  Who is Jesus? Why should he be worshipped? Why be embarrassed by following Jesus? (Sound familiar??)  Come and learn answers to these questions as we discuss the readings of Hebrews.  Offered as another "East of the River" collaborative adult forum offering. St. John's Episcopal Church, 12 Rector St., East Hartford, CT.  All are welcome!

Monday & Tuesday, June 6 & 7, 2011.  "Addressing the Deepest Needs of Adolescents"

A 24 hour symposium for those seeking to engage teenagers in parishes and schools.  Led by Rev. Tony Jarvis at the Berkley Divinity School at Yale University.  This symposium is offered to both lay and clergy persons.  For more information, please contact Rev Paul at St. James' for fees & details.
